Water Management

Water is essential to life, but there is a constant battle in New Orleans and at Xavier to mitigate its negative effects on our community. Xavier University is bisected by the Palmetto Canal, part of the city's stormwater management system, which assists in water regulation and flow control. Too much water causes significant flooding, evident when the rain pools in the streets. Too little causes the ground to sink, known as subsidence, as the land dries and compresses.

In this semi-aquatic environment, we must learn to not only live with water but preserve and protect it. At Xavier, we have a number of projects in the works to help mitigate flooding, manage stormwater and protect this precious resource.
